fashion + typography

I find it pretty hard to believe that if you're interested in fashion that you aren't interested in other aspects of design. Look at that "O"... it's sO sexy. I also like to play word jokes with myself.

This Christopher Kane dress is amazing. I love the idea of a beautiful girl in a beautiful dress without all that over accessorizing and bullshit. THAT is new minimalism. These past few weeks the only jewelry I wear is this silver ring courtesy of Catbird (my favorite jewelry store in Brooklyn) and my Helmut Lang vintage handcuff bracelet. It feels liberating.

Maybe it's the mood I've been in lately. Fashion doesn't have to be "Hey! It's FASHION!" to be considered inspiration. Sometimes labels are just expensive and boring. I love the intimacy of this. A feeling I rarely experience these days. And Esther is probably one of the most gorgeous girls ever.

i want a skateboard

I really enjoyed this Vans Vault lookbook. I want to learn how to skateboard. It's always good to keep learning - even if it's just the little things. Plus, I get to wear this sweet sweatshirt. Most of my friends are very different than me. I think that's a good thing. It feels good to share knowledge... and not for any specific purpose... just to know. I've also never been very good at talking a good game. I was hanging out with my friend Alex and he kind of taught me how to exercise my swagger... uh... swagga?

Alex used to work with Kanye West. Always a Yeezy concept.

A homeless guy tried to give me money today. He said he loved me. And tried to hand me multiple ones. Another guy told me to eat a sandwich... people say funny things to me. Oh yeah, I updated my tumblr.

fresh

The first photo is from Kanye West... of course. The second photo is from a series that my friend Tim is doing. When he's finished, I'll be sure to post the rest. I really appreciate how men approach clothing and fashion. The way they catalog things. And the way they highlight the little details... whether super worn or super clean. It's all kind of special.

Men fascinate me to no end. I've been working on a personal project for the past month which I'm almost ready (and kind of scared) to debut. It's really personal. But for that reason... I think it'll be really great.

In other news, the cover for my first book is complete. And I'm going back to Tokyo in December.

I'm such an embarrassment to myself sometimes.
Full outfit picture to come.

2ne1

2NE1 is styled by Daul Kim's friends Danny and Xin. And you know I'm all about AzNs in the mainstream... haha. Half of these girls are actually my age. Clearly, I've missed my calling. If you don't think this is annoying, you will probably think this is awesome. Like I do.

chiaki kuriyama

So I grew up with a fierce love for badass Asian chicks. Chiaki Kuriyama was probably one of my first girl crushes -- if you haven't seen one of my favorite movies of all time Battle Royale YOU MUST. I bought this issue of i-D Magazine in 2004 and it still remains as one of my favorite editorials. It took me awhile to find scans of it. Anyways, she wore Helmut Lang. I wore Helmut Lang. I guess it was kind of vanity love.

fno

I will be in Los Angeles September 9-14. So if you are in the area feel free to stop by the 3.1 Phillip Lim party and say hello! :)

I must be sub-consciously channeling Calvin Klein this Labor Day weekend. I have a few friends who work at Levi's and I hear the word "heritage" a lot. Plus, this new minimalism trend has finally pushed me to explore the traditional side of things: denim on denim. Instant classic.

This entry's title was actually taken from the caption of this backpack. HAH!

a day in sf part 2

I have a tendency to do PART 1 and then totally forget PART 2. If you haven't noticed that... feel free not to. The topic of hobbies comes up once in awhile. There are a lot of talented bloggers who are also designers or photographers. My background is in print. So generally, my hobby includes looking at magazines and making comments about how one person's work is better than the other.

On Saturday, my friend and I went to shoot pictures. Our friend Franklin joined us back at the apartment to hang out and look through an impressive archive of fashion books and magazines. Note the out of print Raf Simons Redux in hardcover. So sexy.

It's important to produce good work.

2002-04 were probably the most formative years of my fashion upbringing. And Jessica Miller was definitely one of the hot girls at the time. LOOOOVE HER. This is from a 2003 issue of Paris Vogue.

Steven Klein for Dutch Magazine 2002.

Devon Aoki... of course.

Helmut Lang and his gang.

Anyways, I know a lot of fashion magazines are featuring bloggers. And that's cool. But just because someone is getting xx hits a day doesn't mean that it's going to translate into xx magazine readers. Magazines should just continue to produce good work. Because that's all that really matters. Really.

a day in sf part 1

So I'm normally pretty discrete about documenting my day to day activities. I'm like... selectively shady like that. Anyways, I wanted to share what I did today (minus the work part ew... JK I love what I do). I've grown up in San Francisco most of my life. The places I go to aren't very flashy. But I like them because they feel... very San Francisco.

The Musée d'Orsay is currently holding a traveling exhibition of Impressionist painters at the De Young Museum. I've been to the d'Orsay several years ago, however it was nice to see it all again. This is my dad's favorite period, but I don't particularly care for it. I AM digging this still life though. Kind of great. The museum workers yelled at me after I took this. #rebel

Trying to kill some time... I engaged in some shoe porn text sharing. What? That's a thing. My contribution: Caroline Sieber's Celine sandals. Minimalism perfection. I AM OBSESSED WITH CELINE.

His contribution: Louis Vuitton

Dinner with my best friend. There seems to be some kind of fish theme to this day.

OK so this is kind of my dream house. One of my favorite places in the city is 20th & Sanchez. This area is just so beautiful. The homes are amazing, architectural, and unique. And the view is incredible.

The fog started to roll in. It was actually quite lovely to watch.
