All girl action

Erdem S/S 10

It seems like these days, personal style blogs are all about branding and defining oneself as a certain type of style. Whether it be "rock and roll," "90's grunge," "quirky," or "high-end." I've never been very good at categorizing myself.

Erdem is one of those shows that one might not expect to be a favorite of mine this season... but it absolutely is. Gaelle had assured me once, "don't worry, we won't make you wear any floral." A phrase which seemed to confuse me. I love floral! I love lace! I love dresses!

Versus S/S 10

On the completely opposite end, but perhaps not... Christopher Kane for Versus this season was absolutely killer. It references the 90's, sure. But this is classic Versus with a twist. If it's guilty of anything, it's guilty of referencing its own self.

In a way, that's how I've always seen my own personal style. Self-referential, but kind of undefinable. Well, at least that's the goal. Perhaps, ultimately my downfall. Ok enough of that. I need one of those orange dresses.

I think undefinable is a great characteristic, sometimes with me I go through phrases where a certain look really resonate with me, and after I've exhausted all its options I move onto something else. Sometimes having a strict uniform makes it easier to get dressed, but being undecided on your own style means you definitely have more fun!

Erdem was so girly and cute this season and I love the second orange dress from Versus!

And I get you about the personal style thing. It's kind of annoying when people say that everyone has a sort of "uniform" that they follow regardless. Although that may be somewhat true, it doesn't mean everyone's confined to one set look or trend for the rest of his or her existence o_x;

I love the short black and white Erdem dress.

I'll be honest, i'm not feeling all these cutouts that everyone has been doing in their collections for next season. it looks like they are trying too hard to make something original. but to each their own

and i completely feel the same way. i don't think there's a way to categorize my style, but i do have specific silhouette preferences that i favor when i dress.

What could Versus possibly be guilty of? I think Versus is one of the best examples in the last 5 years, if not decade, of a brand that was washed up and decided to be smart and hire the right people to fix it. It's the best Kane has ever done [his own label is kind of meh when you get past the cool choice of photos] and I hope that it sells well. That will obviously be the test of a labels resurrection during a recession.

I'm really excited for this comeback and hope that brands see this as how to fix something that is broken. Gucci saw it too this season.

I don't like putting myself in a box really. I just wear whatever I feel like at the time, high end or low end. I think you would look great in orange. I, on the other hand, would look terrible.

I think one of the things that's got me burned out on style blogs at the moment is exactly what you stated: the branding and categorizing of style. There's certainly a place for that, but there's also room in the spectrum for experimentation, finding a style, even finding a style, letting it run its course, and adopting another one. As it is, I feel like there's a lot of pressure on bloggers to immediately define themselves, stand out from the lot, and outcool everyone else. I would really love to see a style blog that offers something besides the current Wang/crackwhore mashup. To see someone impeccably dressed - not styled - would be a treat.

In my darker moments, I feel like Wang and Co., along with innovation in design/styling, are offering a high-end version of Hot Topic. "Buy our brand. Buy our cool." Cool, hip, indie are too easily accessible, and really, isn't coolness indefinable and entirely personal, of or pertaining to that person?

I love fashion and have for almost fifteen years. Like anyone else who loves fashion, there are times that I ride the crest to the point that I need a break from it. It's all the leather and sex and hardness. I thought about how to accessorize an outfit the other day to nod to the current trends and I got so sick of it all that my head wanted to explode.

Thanks for offering more than just "fashion," Lulu. You offer a slice of your life, and that's more valuable and dearly appreciated than catalog approach.

I didn't intend to leave an OTR style comment. ;) Just sometimes you gotta vent and ride it out till good design is in again.

i completely agree. i think categorizing is why the fashion industry gets so damn diluted sometimes. so generic and uninspiring. its inspiring to know that a blogger feels this way!

I can relate, I think I just love clothes in general and then I put on something that reflects my mood that day. Style should be fun, not restrictive
